The World Works Better With Us: Disability Pride Month
What is Disability Pride Month?
July is Disability Pride Month! It’s a time to celebrate the disability community and their history, achievements, diversity, and culture. It began in the United States in 1990 after the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed, and is now celebrated around the world. The holiday encourages people to recognize disability as a natural part of human diversity, celebrate the progress made through disability rights and advocacy, and continue working toward a more accessible, equitable, and inclusive future.
A theme is selected every year by the Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates (NCSA), a disabled-led national council. This year’s theme is “The World Works Better With Us”, a reminder that the world is a better place when everyone has equal access, and people with disabilities are included, respected, and supported.
Disability Looks Different for Everyone
Every person's experience with disability is unique, shaped by their individual circumstances, identities, and environment. There are many different kinds of disability and access needs. While this month is about celebration, it’s important to recognize the challenges the community still faces. These can include inaccessible buildings and transportation, challenges finding equitable employment, limited access to healthcare and education, and attitudes or misconceptions that lead to stigma and exclusion. Creating a more inclusive society means recognizing these barriers and working together to remove them, so that people with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate fully in their communities.
An Inclusive Future
At Gateway Holistic, Disability Pride Month reflects our ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive future and creating environments where individuals with autism and diverse developmental needs can thrive. We believe the road to a more inclusive future is built through compassion, accessibility, and person-centered support that empowers people to participate fully in their communities. By celebrating disability, embracing diversity, and continuing to remove barriers, we move closer to a society where everyone has the opportunity to belong, contribute, and flourish.
Ways You Can Celebrate:
Learn from disabled voices. Consume content created by disabled creators to gain a better understanding of their lived experiences.
Challenge stereotypes and ableism. Reflect on your own assumptions, use respectful and inclusive language, and speak up when you encounter ableist attitudes or misinformation.
Advocate for accessibility. Consider how your workplace, school, organization, or community can become more accessible. Even small changes like using captions on videos, providing accessible documents, or ensuring there are places to sit at events can make a meaningful difference.
Amplify disabled voices. Share resources created by disabled people to ensure conversations about disability include people with lived experience.
Volunteer or donate. Support organizations that promote disability rights, accessibility, independent living, or inclusive recreation in your community.
