Recognizing National Indigenous History Month
June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to honour the histories, cultures, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. At Gateway Holistic, this month holds special meaning for us, because the values at the heart of our autism and developmental support services have deep roots in Indigenous ways of knowing and caring for one another.
Healing Has Always Been Holistic
Long before "holistic care" became a guiding framework in neurodevelopmental support, Indigenous communities understood something profound: true healing involves the whole person — mind, body, spirit, and community. This interconnected, strengths-based view of well-being, passed down through generations of Indigenous knowledge, shapes how we think about person-centred care at Gateway Holistic.
We don't see the autistic individuals, neurodivergent children, and families we serve as a set of challenges to be managed. We see whole people, embedded in relationships, culture, and community. As Indigenous scholar Grant Bruno has noted, the Indigenous way looks at what's right with a child — celebrating their gifts while still acknowledging their challenges. That philosophy resonates deeply with how we approach every individual we support.
We are grateful to be inspired by that wisdom, and we hold it with deep respect.
Care That Reflects the Communities We Serve
We operate on Treaty 6 territory and the Métis Homeland, the ancestral lands of the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Dene, Ojibway/Saulteaux, Anishinaabe, Inuit, and many other peoples. This is not just geography. It shapes our responsibility to the communities around us.
For the Indigenous families and individuals we support, cultural competence isn't optional, it's essential. Feeling seen and understood in care means having practitioners who honour your background, respect your perspective, and make space for your story. We are committed to ongoing learning, listening, and reflection so that our care is truly responsive to every person we serve.
Walking the Path of Reconciliation Together
Reconciliation doesn't happen in grand gestures alone — it lives in everyday choices. It's in how we welcome families. It's in the questions we ask and the assumptions we let go of. It's in creating space for Indigenous voices, perspectives, and healing traditions to be honoured rather than overlooked.
This June, we invite our community to pause and reflect alongside us. To learn something new about the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada. To acknowledge the land beneath your feet. And to consider how each of us, in our own sphere of life, can take meaningful steps forward.
